Care Details: How to Wash a Hemp-Filled Quilt

Natural hemp textile has become a major home design trend thanks to its hypoallergenic properties, natural antibacterial qualities, and exceptional breathability. However, when buying a hemp quilt from TM “Charivna Nich” or organic products from UKONO, owners often ask: what is the best way to care for these delicate eco-friendly items?

Today, we share detailed guidelines and instructions on how to wash and care for hemp-filled quilts and pillows to keep them fresh and soft.

Why Does Hemp Insulation/Filler Require Special Care?

Hemp fiber is a fully natural, organic material. Inside the quilt, it is structured as a carded, quilted batt. To ensure the fibers retain their loft, resilience, and insulating properties, you must avoid harsh mechanical or chemical treatments.

How to Machine Wash a Hemp Quilt

Wash the quilt only when necessary. For minor stains, spot cleaning with a damp cloth is highly recommended. If a full wash is needed, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Right Cycle: Choose a delicate, handwash, or wool cycle only.
  2. Water Temperature: Ensure the water temperature does not exceed 30°C (86°F). Hot water can cause natural hemp fibers to shrink.
  3. Detergent Choice: Never use powders containing chlorine, bleaching agents, or phosphates. Instead, use a liquid detergent designed for delicate fabrics or wool, as it rinses out much cleaner.
  4. Spin Speed: Set the spin cycle to a minimum speed (400-600 RPM) or turn it off entirely, letting the water drain naturally.

Drying and Ironing

Improper drying can warp any natural quilt. Remember these rules:

  • Lay the quilt flat horizontally on a drying rack, gently stretching the corners to shape.
  • Do not hang a wet quilt vertically, as the weight of the water will cause the natural filling to clump or sag.
  • Dry in a well-ventilated area or outdoors in the shade. Avoid direct sunlight and radiators.
  • Ironing is not recommended since compressing the quilt flat ruins its natural loft. If needed, lightly steam the cotton cover from a distance.

Regular airing outdoors on a dry, windy day is a great way to refresh your quilt without washing. The hemp fibers will naturally shed moisture and restore their natural freshness.
